- Explore South
Beach, this wide white sand beach stretches to the horizon,
or if you don’t fancy walking, cruise along beautiful
South
Beach in your car, no need for a 4WD. But if you do have
a 4WD there are plenty of tracks to go exploring. South Beach
is also home to our local Surf Club with regular Patrols conducted
on weekends during the Summer.
- For a truly leisurely walk the Irwin
River Nature Trail is just perfect. Spot all the interesting
river wildlife, including Black Swans and Pelicans just to name
a few. Access off Church Street where the Lookout affords beautiful
views of the river mouth and ocean. You can also access the
trail from the car park at the River Mouth on Ocean Drive when
the river mouth is closed to the ocean.
- Charter a boat with some friends and go
fishing for the day, or take along the rest of the family
for a relaxing boat cruise.

- For History of the twin towns do the Heritage
Trail. This 1.6km walk features 28 heritage listed buildings.
See the Royal Steam Flour Mill, built in 1894 from the plans
of Mr Hendry Simon Manchester, England, its sturdy steam engines
ground wheat from surrounding farms until 1935.
- The
Priory Lodge is another magnificent building. Built in 1881
as a Tavern it was converted into The Saint Dominic's Priory
by the Dominican Sisters, it has now been lovingly restored
back to a Colonial Bar, Restaurant and Rooms. The beautiful
landscaped gardens offer an idyllic setting to partake of a
cold beer or perhaps a Devonshire Tea.
- Visit Russ Cottage, built in the late 1860’s,
the Cottage was restored by the Irwin District Historical Society
and is typical of a yeoman’s cottage of the time. Opening
times 10 am to 12 pm on Sundays. Entry $2.50.
- The Dongara Cemetery contains some interesting
headstones dating back to 1874. It also contains a Wall of Remembrance
dedicated to the Dominican Nuns of the region.
- The Fisherman’s Lookout-Obelisk
at Port Denison offers panoramic views of the harbour and surrounds.
A Plaque depicting local shipwrecks is on display and a boardwalk
now surrounds the Obelisk to allow easy viewing. Take your Camera.
- Visit the only Olive Oil Processing Facility
in the Mid West “Silverdale Olive Orchard and Processing
Facility” to sample olives and olive oils. Open Saturdays
April to November, other times by appointment. They are at Melaluca
Road, Dongara,

- From July to October, the Mid West Region
is blessed with many wildflower
species. You will find well maintained gravel roads which give
easy access to the un-cleared areas of the hinterland. Mingenew
Charters and Tours have a 14 seat Deluxe Coach, min of 10 people,
so ring Frank or Rosalie on 9928 1002 for availability and book
a tour.
- Or take a drive yourself, an hour east on
the Mingenew Road, follow the signs and visit COALSEAM PARK.
The abundance of everlastings in season provides a colourful
carpet that has to be seen to be believed. Don’t forget
your picnic lunch and something to drink. The famous Wreath
Flower is usually visible in the Wildflower
season at the northern exit / entrance to the park.
- For a more leisurely pursuit, how about a
game of Golf at our picturesque 18 hole grassed course. See
you at the 19th for a cold beer!

- Visit the Blue Ocean Gallery at Port Denison
to experience an array of fare locally made by its resident
artists Adrian and Irene. Follow the signs off Pt Leander Drive
at the Golf Course Road or phone 9927 1509.
- For the young at heart, there is our Skateboarding
Park on Ocean Drive at the back of the Recreation Centre. Hard
to beat skateboarding with the Indian Ocean as your backdrop.
- For the keen Surfers longing to catch that
perfect wave, try Surf Beach (true to its name), South Beach
or The Point (the left side of the Marina), may need some old
sandshoes for the walk across the reef, there’s a buoy
to tie them up on for the walk back in. About 10kms north of
Dongara try Flat Rocks.
- Kick back at our DRIVE-IN Cinema! During the
summer months, the Drive-In shows up-to-date movies on Sat evenings.
Enjoy watching your favorite stars under the stars! Take your
deck chair if you prefer to sit out doors. Treats to satisfy
at the kiosk.
- For the kids, the Port
Denison Foreshore offers wonderful playgrounds. Sit under
a rotunda and watch the kids play & perhaps cook up a bbq.
- While in the area you may wish to visit the
Greenough Wildlife and Bird Park, have a picnic or BBQ on the
lawn areas and relax and let the kids enjoy a variety of animals
incuding Kangaroos, Dingoes, Crocodiles, Emus, Camels and many
more. Open Daily from 9am to 5pm. Entrance prices Adults $5,
Children $2, Pensioners/Seniors $4, and children under 2 are
free.
- Greenough is also home to the historic Greenough
Hamlet and imagine what life was like at the turn of the last
century. Join a tour of the Hamlet or stroll around at your
own leisure. Don’t forget to take your Camera. Lunch or
Tea at the Hampton
Arms on Company Road can’t be beaten and if the tummy
is already full, a cool ale might be in order.
- Dongara is home to “Larry Lobster”.
Every year at the beginning of November, the town comes alive
with the Larry Lobster Festival. There is an art exhibition,
all kinds of market stalls, lots of top entertainment and a
huge Fireworks Display held on the Saturday night. On the Sunday,
the festivities for the weekend move down to Port Denison Foreshore,
the venue of the traditional “Blessing of the Fleet”.
Over 70 local boats are decorated for the occasion. After the
Blessing Ceremony, there’s fun for all on the Denison
Foreshore run by the Lions Club with displays, entertainment,
and the famous rope coiling competition.
- Enjoy a Cappuccino in the cool shade
of the historic Moreton Bay Figs whilst watching the world go
by in Moreton Terrace.
